After 15 years, Texas drivers can order embossed license plates again

After a 15-year absence, Texas drivers can once again order embossed license plates with raised numbers and letters.
The state stopped producing embossed plates in 2009, converting to digitally produced flat plates for efficiency and manufacturing purposes. The Texas Legislature in 2023 authorized My Plates, the state’s official plate provider, to bring back the embossed designs.
MyPlates is offering a few options: a retro black and yellow plate reminiscent of the 1950s, a black and gold plate, and blue and gold plate that uses high-definition gold sheeting. The company has received more than 1,000 orders.

A second line of plates will offer black and white, gold and black and carbon fiber and will enter production once there are 200 preorders.
An embossed plate costs $114 per year if you choose the five-year plan, $173 a year for the three-year plan, or $270 for one year.
Surveys from MyPlates showed that Texas drivers missed embossed plates, Plate CEO and President Steve Farrar told The Dallas Morning News.
“From a design perspective, these bring back a little nostalgia, that retro feel,” Farrar said. “They’re very classy.”
MyPlates sells personalized plates and has generated more than $190 million in new revenue for the Texas general revenue fund since it began in 2009, the company said in a statement.
